In order to determine the conventions of the genre I am have chosen to do my music video on, I am going to analyse music videos with different genre to my chosen song so I can take a different view of music dies also to take ideas from them to create a whole new music video for my coursework. Also I am going to research the conventions of the pop genre to find out things I am going to include in my music video.
Genre is a type or category full of codes and conventions to recognise that genre whenever and wherever we see it. It helps us study texts and audience responses by dividing them into categories based on certain things. When it comes to the genre of pop they have certain codes and conventions which define it. Pop music conventions are the most recognisable because of the artists and their manufactured recognisable look. For example One Direction from the X factor. They were manufactured because before the live shows they all had their own ‘style’ because they didn’t know each other but when it got to the show they was turned into clones all wearing the same type of trousers tops and shoes. This was all done for promotion to make them more successful and to be attractive to girls which would then conclude in more viewers for the show.
^^^ before ^^^^^AfterConventionally in a pop music video the form is more performance because pop artists like showing of their talent but they still include narrative so that the lyrics and the meaning of the song will be acted out to make the audience feel involved.
The conventions of pop music songs are usually up beat and catchy and the most popular ones are made by successful music artists like Rihanna, lady gaga and Katy Perry who have their own distinctive look. The generic pop themes are usually about love for example Rihanna’s ‘only girl in the world’ Katy Perry’s teenage dream and Lady Gaga’s ‘bad romance’. Most pop artists don’t write their own songs so it is easier for the person who writers them just to write about love.
Every pop video has the same typical mise-en-scene the lighting is usually bright and shot in the daytime to create a great atmosphere for the video. Most successful pop artists chose to shoot their music video abroad where it has a fabulous feeling about it. The lighting is usually made to focus on the artist.
The Camera shots are close ups of the artist singing on long shots of them performing. The music videos are usually edited quickly so it shows continuity and goes in beat with the fast music. Quick camera shots are conventional in pop music videos because it makes look like there is a good atmosphere.
Editing can also go to great lengths to make the music video look cheesy and outgoing. Editing also makes the music video have continuity.
Costume is an important factor in the pop genre because it defines the artist and gives them a better chance at gaining fans and making merchandise. Usually pop artists have several costumes changes during a music video or a tour. Artists like Lady Gaga like to make statements with their costumes just like she did when on a music award show and turned up in a meat costume. Pop stars clothing is usually from expensive fashion designers like Alexander Mcqueen.
Pop stars are represented in a conventional way of being big idols to a huge fan base and people who young boys and girls can look up to. They are seen as being individual but really they are all manufactured to look a certain way and be attractive to the opposite sex. Their record company has full control over what they look like and how they present themselves. For example The Saturdays are a much manufactured group owned by Polydor who are owned by universal music group. They are five members who each have their own distinctive features like different hair colours and skin colours and they all come from different backgrounds.
Pop starts will pay between £40,000 and 100,000 just for the music video but they gain the money back in making as much merchandise from t-shirts to novelty things like cups. When touring Pop artists are known for selling out arena’s in days but the most famous and most quickest sell out was pop boy band Take That for their comeback tour. 300,000 tickets were sold in less than an hour.
Pop artists are more likely to perform on mainstream award shows like the Brits and MTV music awards. For example Jessie J in the MTV VMA awards. Pop artists are known for lip-syncing especially on live shows because they have to multi task by singing and performing for example Pop Star Cheryl Cole got slated for not singing all of her song ‘fight for this love’ when she performed on the X Factor because she was focusing more on her dancing.
Most pop music artists are American because America is the place were pop stars are born so most pop stars want to make it ‘BIG’ in America first.
Pop album covers tend to more than likely just have the artist on the front instead of an abstract album cover with just art on the front with the text. For example Tinie Tempah’s ‘discovery’ which has a photo of him but it is a very technically editing photo. Not simple in any sense.
Other conventions of pop are
-over the top dance routines
-people other than the artist in the video
-icon graphic features linking in with society's problems
